Sony Walkman ZX2 vs Apple Ipod : Is there a battle?

They belong to different categories, meant for different people
Sony Corporation has unveiled a new age Walkman in CES 2015. It is called Walkman ZX2. By looks of it, the gadget looks premium and is priced at a whooping USD 1100. This is no way a gadget that you will just tuck in your bag like its old version when you go out on a picnic. At that price, this is a premium lifestyle gadget you will like to keep safe and maybe locked too. So a direct competition with iPod, which is more of a convenient device during your morning walk, is not suitable. At least still Sony manages to bring out stripped down devices of the current version at a much lower cost, I do not see a $1200 gadget battling it out with $300 gadget. Both are simply meant for different audience.
Who cares? There is no market anyway even for the Ipod
For the last few years the sale of Ipod had been dwindling. And the market is cannibalized by Iphones, Android Phones, Windows phones ? aka, the smartphones. And add to it Ipads and a whole new generation of evolving tablets. Then there are Apps that gives you free music on the go and storage devices don't matter anymore.  In such a shrinking market where is the space for a new player to even enter and create a space? If this is the market Sony aims to target in the coming days, they better stay away and concentrate on their Xperia range of smartphones. So ZX2 vs Ipod ? nah! Not a chance.
So who is Walkman ZX2 for?
While Walkman ZX2 brings out the nostalgia of the old Walkmans and Sony deserves kudos for giving life back to one most popular device on earth, the new generation device is not meant for masses as of now. It's targeted towards Professional music lovers and thus Sony has put in a lot of efforts to deliver premium high-end audio experience through this device. For this particular segment Apple and its Iphone doesn't hold a chance. Rather Walkman ZX2 is more poised to fight it out with Neil young's Pono Player.
